Story Ideas

Whether for your own story or an interview, some ideas on what to cover (and if you have more, please drop us a line – we’re always looking to expand this list).

General:

  • Describe one time you felt particularly Jewish – could range from spiritual experience, exclusion / isolation, or any other motivating factor.
  • Tell about one of your family’s (perhaps) unique Jewish traditions.
  • How did your family end up where they are today – geographically, socially, etc.?
  • How and why do you observe (religiously or spiritually) the way you do?
  • How has your family’s observances changed through the generations?
  • What is your connection to Israel?
  • Tell us the circumstances around one moment you “felt Jewish” and why it was great (or not).
  • Tell us the circumstances around one moment you felt “othered” and how it impacted you?

Events:

  • Tell us about your (or a family member’s) wedding, bar/bat mitzvah, funeral of a loved one, bris/naming, confirmation, etc.

Israel

  • Assuming you’ve visited: How was it being surrounded by people, all of whom shared your religion and/or ethnic history?
  • If you’ve made aliyah – how is it? How was it? Why did you make that decision?

Diaspora Life

  • If you’ve left Israel (or spent notable amounts of time there) – how is your life when you’re not there?
  • Have your observances changed? How has your life in general changed?

Food

  • Describe / recite a favorite family (Jewish) recipe or a time where food played a notable role in a Jewish story.
  • Recipes – give us all the recipes!
